MORE ON HOPI JEWELRY
The Hopi Journey Maze is a very old Hopi design. It represents many journeys through one’s life. The Hopi believe you enter a journey by taking the first step in to the Journey Maze (The foot step entering the maze represents this.) You then work your way though all the twists and turns of your journey until you reach the center or the end of the journey. When reaching the center you have a choice of another journey and must choose one of the four directions that represents the next step in one’s life. After choosing the next journey the process then starts over.
Originally from the village of Hotevilla, Veryl Pooyouma is a full Hopi Indian of the Sun and Corn Clan. A self-taught artist, Pooyouma first learned the art of silversmithing by watching well-known Hopi artists Charles Loloma and Lawrence Saufkie. At 17, he began creating pieces of his own. Pooyouma now works with both traditional and contemporary Hopi designs, incorporating sterling silver and 14K gold into his one-of-a-kind jewelry.
